TARGET2010 PROJECT

Target2010 Project Overview

In December 2005, the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN), along with key partners hired AngelouEconomics to embark on a 10-month economic development strategic planning process.

The northern Nevada region has had strong growth in recent years. With that growth has come a new understanding that the region should pursue continued economic vitality while making sure that the region’s high quality of life is maintained for future generations. To achieve this, the region must have a greater focus on targeting quality companies that offer better jobs with higher wages, that do not put a strain on the natural environment, and that give back to the community.

AngelouEconomics has worked closely with EDAWN and its regional economic development partners to develop a truly actionable strategy. The project has been constructed in four phases, culminating in a community-wide Economic Summit event. The first phase of the project involved extensive community outreach and public input. AngelouEconomics believes that strong economic development plans must be driven by the voice of the community. During this first phase, we launched an online survey, which gathered input from nearly 1,300 residents and business leaders. We also conducted numerous focus groups and one on one interviews with government officials, educators, business leaders, and enthusiastic residents.

Over the next 6-7 months, AngelouEconomics utilized this information gathered while on the ground in the region and coupled it with our analysis to develop a series of reports that shape the Target2010 project. Report 1, the Comprehensive Assessment provides a fundamental look at the strengths and challenges facing the region. Report 2, the Target Industry Analysis presents six key business sectors that should be the focus of future economic development efforts. Report 3, the Entrepreneurship and Technology Assessment takes a focused look at the entrepreneurial climate and the ability for the region to support technology businesses. Report 4, the Strategic Recommendations offers strategies for making local improvements to make the region more attractive to key business sectors, entrepreneurs, young professionals, and other important target audiences.

Key strategic priorities that have been identified include providing an environment for entrepreneurship to thrive, making the region’s workforce world class, maintaining and enhancing the region’s high quality of life, building an infrastructure to support high tech development, and ensuring a regional approach to economic development. Each of these strategic priorities and numerous others are outlined in greater detail with actionable steps for the northern Nevada community to implement.

The Target2010 planning initiative has been a tremendous success so far, but its ultimate success now rests with the citizens, organizations, and leaders of northern Nevada. True success is measured by how well this plan will be implemented. Task forces are beginning to be formed to implement major recommendations, but more involvement will be needed. We encourage you to become involved. Economic health will not improve without action, and action requires collaboration and a broad base of supporters. Remember, economic development is everyone’s responsibility. The goal of this project is to ensure that northern Nevada remains desirable for many years to come, you can play a role in this outcome!
