Entrepreneurial Update
EDAWN Entrepreneurial Development Department has been chosen to receive a $300,000 grant from (over three years) the U.S Department of Commerce!
U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, announced that 42 organizations – including nonprofits, institutions of higher education, and entrepreneurship-focused organizations from 28 states, will receive over $17 million to create and expand cluster focused proof-of-concept and commercialization programs, and early-stage seed capital funds through the Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) Regional Innovation Strategies (RIS) program. We are thrilled to be among those chosen, out of more than 200 applicants, and we look forward to expanding our entrepreneurial efforts in Northern Nevada. For the full announcement, click here.

The 2017 Collaboration Coins have hit the streets!
By providing people with the startup deck and collaboration coin, it’s our intent to deputize the community to grow the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Local coffee shops are the watering holes & meeting places for our startups and we want to continue to encourage “serendipity”. Do you want to work with a team of engineering students at the University of Nevada, Reno for their senior projects?
Capstone Connect is a great resource that connects entrepreneurs and businesses in the community with talent at the University of Nevada, Reno. You can submit a project topic and try-out some of the talent in the fields of electrical, mechanical, computer, chemical, and civil engineering. There is no compensation required, it takes less time than training an intern, and it beats using a recruiter.

Being recognized as an HSI brings TMCC’s commitment to honoring diversity in higher education practices to national awareness. TMCC is also a member of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Hispanic-Serving Institution Task Force. For more information, see the attached press release.
UNR just recently received a boost from the National Science Foundation with a $300,000 grant which will help build a sustainable and diverse workforce development pipeline for Nevada’s emerging science, technology, engineering and mathematics industries.
Per David Shintani, associate dean in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, a focus of the program is to increase the participation of low-income, first-generation individuals from underrepresented groups in Nevada’s STEM economy. For more information, go here.
